about Lawrenceville : Head Master’s Welcome

Lawrenceville is a place where ideas count. Just ask George Akerlof '58, the 2001 Nobel Laureate for Economics. Dr. Akerlof was back on campus in October 2002 to receive Lawrenceville's highest alumni award, the Lawrenceville Medal. In accepting his award, Akerlof described the importance of his Lawrenceville education to his life and career:
That habit of mind that every Lawrentian takes from Lawrenceville is the real secret of this Nobel Prize... At Lawrenceville we sit around these oval tables. We are expected to define the class discussion. Every teacher knows who you are. They know who you are, not just in the classroom, but on the campus, on the field, and in the houses... We offer the education that every school should offer every student in America. Every student deserves to be taught that her idea counts.

The features of a Lawrenceville education that Akerlof highlights are the same features that generations of Lawrenceville students right up to the present cite when asked to describe what made their Lawrenceville education special. I invite you to visit this remarkable community—where both people and ideas matter.
