This service trip to Brazil was initiated after junior Savannah Kochinke presented her experience with the organization HOPE UNLIMITED to the School community during an all-school presentation. The focus of the service is to work with the organization as they assist at-risk children and teenagers from the region of Campinas. These children have been rescued from the streets and have begun building new lives while living at The City of Youth. Here, these children attend classes, and as they get older, receive vocational training while living in a nurturing, caring and protective home environment. Our students will learn about The City of Youth, and how important it is to the survival of these children. Lawrenceville students may assist in sprucing up one of the children’s residences – painting and providing new bedding for each of the children in the home they work on; they may also assist with grounds work.
After a week of service, students will end their stay in Brazil with three days in the coastal city of Salvador, experiencing some of the rich African-Brazilian culture, including art, music and history, while staying in the “old city” area. Students will have the opportunity to observe Capoeira, a form of martial arts practiced by the slaves brought to Brazil from Angola in the colonial period, and a performance by Balé Folclórico de Bahi, a world renowned professional folkloric dance company. While in Salvador, students will take a day tour of the beach area to the north, with a visit to the Tamar Project (an important project protecting sea turtles), in Praia de Forte.
