European-American Studies in England, France, and Poland

A component of the Euro-Am class is to have the opportunity to participate in a spring break study program.  Specifically, the tour will travel to London, England, the Somme battle fields of France, and Krakow, Poland. The trip will be an experience in which students will first participate in archival research then travel to key sites in Europe that represent the horrors of modern warfare.  The journey will be based on a book by Professor Sheehan of Stanford University, “Where have all the Soldiers Gone?” that argues that Europe, unlike America, is going through yet another revolution as it rejects the practice of war.

The spring break trip will include a stay in London where the student will have the opportunity to research the archives of the Imperial War Museum, two days in France visiting the Somme World War I battle fields, and then on to Poland to experience Auschwitz. In addition there will be ample time during the stay to visit the major cultural sites of London. For example, students will consider the ethics surrounding the stewardship of antiquities as they view the Elgin Marbles currently housed at the British Museum.
