Sea Kayaking Expedition – Eleuthera, Bahamas

Join Lawrenceville Outdoor Programs on this fully self-supported sea kayaking trip off the coast of Eleuthera, Bahamas, as we explore a region of the Bahamas rarely visited. The largely undeveloped Eleuthera is home of incredible people, beautiful turquoise waters, secluded pink sand beaches, coral reefs and an amazing diversity of aquatic life. After spending two days at The Island School, honing paddling skills, outfitting boats, and learning about the natural and cultural world of the Bahamas, this expedition will set off for seven days of sea kayaking and camping along the southern coast of Eleuthera. Along the way, there will be plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, exploring, and enjoying the beautiful sunsets and sunrises. The paddling portion of this trip will culminate at the famous and isolated Lighthouse Beach.

While this expedition is open to all students, it will be the culminating trip for the spring Outdoor Leadership program. Outdoor Leadership students will be given first priority for participation in this expedition. The Outdoor Leadership Program is an afternoon program offered by Outdoor Programs. The goal of the course is to teach students the skills, tools and attitude to be competent leaders both in the backcountry and within their community in everyday life. While it is not required for students to have been a part of the Outdoor Leadership Program to take part in this expedition, the experiential curriculum will be concentrated around outdoor leadership. This trip will focus on two aspects of effective outdoor leadership:

  1. Developing competent technical skills in backcountry travel, survival, and expedition.
  2. Developing effective leadership skills including group communication, conflict resolution, decision making, team work and student teaching.

Students on this trip can expect a physically, mentally and emotionally challenging experience as they learn how to be safe and competent expeditionary leaders.
