Nick Ogden ’11 Named Captain of the 96 th Lawrenceville School Hockey Team
Head Coach Etienne Bilodeau has announced that Nick Ogden ’11 will serve as the captain of the 2010-2011 Lawrenceville School Boys’ Varsity ice hockey team, the 96 th edition of the storied Big Red ice hockey program. The rising senior defenseman from Montclair, NJ scored two goals and added seven assists to finish second among Big Red blueliners in scoring during the 2009-2010 campaign in addition to his fine defensive play.
Chris Zaires ’07 Rewarded for Outstanding Rookie Campaign at Brown University
Following an outstanding first-year season for the resurgent Brown University ice hockey team, Chris Zaires ’07 was awarded the team’s Kevin R. Pope Memorial Trophy, “awarded to the first-year player who, in the eyes of his teammates, contributed most to the success of his team.” During the season, Zaires recorded a 9-15-24 line in 36 games played to help Brown to a third place finish in the ECACHL Conference Tournament. His nine goals were the 9 th most scored by a first-year player in school history; his 15 assists were the 7 th most recorded by a first-year player in school history; and his 24 points were the 6 th most by a first-year player in school history. For his efforts in the classroom, Zaires was also named to the ECAC All-Academic team in June.
Martin Drolet ’07 Stars for Middlebury; Named NCAA All-American
Martin Drolet ’07, a star forward at Middlebury College, has been named an All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Drolet, a two-time All-NESCAC selection, led his Panthers to their eighth NESCAC Championship, an overall record of 19-5-4, and a place in the NCAA Tournament. For the season, he received First-Team All-NESCAC honors, was twice named NESCAC Player of the Week, was named to the all-tournament teams in both the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout and the Middlebury College Hockey Classic, and was named MVP of the Middlebury College Hockey Classic. Drolet led the NESCAC in points and assists, and was fourth in goals. He was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 2008-2009, and currently has a 34-35-69 line in 55 NCAA career games played.
Carolina Hurricanes Acquire Bobby Sanguinetti ’06 from New York Rangers
On June 26, 2010, the Carolina Hurricanes acquired former Lawrenceville stand-out defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti ‘06 from the New York Rangers in exchange for two draft choices. Sanguinetti completed his second full professional season in 2009-10, splitting the campaign between the Rangers and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In addition to making his NHL debut this year, Sanguinetti scored nine goals and earned 29 assists in 61 AHL regular-season games. He was drafted by the Rangers in the first round (21st overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Roger Holeczy ’95 Represents Hungary at the 2010 IIHF World Championships
Roger Holeczy ’95 represented the Hungarian National Team at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships this past spring. With a 1-2-3 line in five games played, Holeczy, a two-time Northeastern University captain who plays his professional hockey with the with the Budapest Stars, helped lead Hungary to a second place finish in Division I Group B. It was Holeczy’s fifth consecutive appearance with Team Hungary at the IIHF World Championships.
Alex Westlund ’94 Stars in the Austrian League
After leading his Linz Black Wings to the finals of the Austrian Hockey League, former Lawrenceville and Yale star netminder Alex Westlund ’94 was awarded the Ron Kennedy Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player. For the season, Westlund won 37 games, stopped 1895 shots, and had a 91.23% save percentage en route to MVP honors.
Cody McKinney ’07 Named to NESCAC All-Academic Team
Cody Mckinney ’07, a junior netminder at Colby College, was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Winter All-Academic Team. To qualify, a student-athlete must have reached junior academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. McKinney excelled on the ice as well as in the classroom during the season, finishing with a 10-8-4 mark while recording a 2.52 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
Paul Lee ’08 Named Dartmouth College’s Most Improved Player
Paul Lee ’08 was honored as the recipient of the Manser Award as the Most Improved Player on Dartmouth College’s Division I ECACHL ice hockey team at the team’s annual spring banquet. Lee turned up his game in the latter part of the 2009-2010 season, leading Dartmouth to a 4-2-2 record in their final eight games. Lee was equally successful in the classroom, garnering ECAC All-Academic team honors for the second consecutive season.
Zach Diaco ’06 Rewarded for Break-Out Season at Tufts University
Zach Diaco ’06 enjoyed a stellar 2009-2010 season at Tufts University, leading the Jumbos to their best season since joining the NESCAC in 2001-2002. In the early part of the season, Diaco was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Rutland Herald Invitational after leading his team to the title. Diaco’s strong play continued after the New Year, as he was named to the NESCAC Honor Roll for the Week of February 8, 2010. Diaco finished the season as Tufts’ leading goal scorer, and in conference play, was the NESCAC’s second leading goal scorer and finished third in overall points. For his efforts, Diaco was named Tufts University’s Most Improved Player.
Jeff Van Siclen ’05 Named to ECAC-East All-Academic Team
Jeff Van Siclen ’05, who recently completed his second season at UMass-Boston, was named to the ECAC-East All-Academic team for his performance in the classroom and on in the ice during the 2009-2010 season. To be named to the All-Academic team, the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and have competed in at least one-half of his team's contests during the current season.
Brandon Weiner ’07 Honored at the University of Delaware
Brandon Weiner ’07, who served as team captain for the University of Delaware Blue Hens this past season, garnered team, league, and national post-season accolades. For leading his team to another strong season, Weiner was honored by his team as the winner of the Coaches Award, which honors “ that player who exemplifies the qualities of a true and passionate leader; someone who thrives under adversity and most of all, someone who has an unwavering desire to win.” The honors continued for Weiner, who, after being named to the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) All-Conference Team, was named an American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I All-Star.
Rich Stewart ’85 Inducted into Lawrenceville School Athletic Hall of Fame
Rich Stewart ’85, one of the finest players in Big Red history, was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame on May 8, 2010. At Lawrenceville, Stewart’s coaches and teammates called him “the Franchise.” He was a two time captain, Charles F. Weeden Prize winner during his senior season, and a two-time All-Prep selection. He led the Big Red to the Lawrenceville School Invitational Tournament Finals, three consecutive New Jersey Division I Prep Titles, and a Princeton Day School Tournament Championship. He is the Lawrenceville School’s All-Time Leading Scorer in goals, assists, and points among defenseman.
From Lawrenceville, Stewart advanced to St. Lawrence University, where his teams won two ECAC championships and advanced to the 1987-1988 NCAA Division I Championship game during his tenure. His contributions to the St. Lawrence hockey program – on and off the ice – were so significant that the St. Lawrence University hockey team has named its Rookie of the Year Award in his honor.
Stewart joins Karl Behr ‘1903, Grant Peacock ’12, Jackson Hall ’49, Eugene Scott ’56, Jock Hannum ’62, Robert Plumb ’76, John Atherton ’89, and Alex Westlund ’94 as Lawrenceville hockey players who have been inducted into Lawrenceville’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lawrentians Excel in Division I Conference Tournaments
Lawrenceville hockey alumni continued to make their mark in NCAA Division I hockey over the past several weeks during conference tournament action. In ECACHL First-Round action between Dartmouth College and Quinnipiac College, Paul Lee ’08 helped Dartmouth force a deciding game three when he scored his fourth goal of the season to lead the Indians to a 6-3 victory in Game Two.
In the First-Round match-up between North Country rivals St. Lawrence University and Clarkson University, Mark Armstrong ’06 recorded an assist in Game Two, as the Saints moved on to the Quarterfinals after a 3-2 victory in the decisive Game Three. In Second-Round action against Colgate University, Armstrong recorded an assist on the game-tying goal, propelling the Saints to a 4-3 victory and a two game series sweep of the Red Raiders.
Finally, Chris Zaires ’07 scored the game winning goal in Brown University’s dramatic 3-2 win in Game Three over host RPI to lead the resurgent Bears into a Quarterfinal match-up with #1 seeded Yale. After ousting Yale in a three game upset, the Bears streak came an end against Cornell in the ECAC Semi-Final. In the consolation game against St. Lawrence, Zaires recorded his 14th assist of the season to lead the Bears to a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence. For the season, Zaires was the leading scorer among Brown freshman in goals, assists, and points.
In Hockey East, Tim Whitehead ’79 led his young (and resurgent) University of Maine Black Bears from a predicted 8th place pre-season conference finish to the Hockey East Championship game and the brink of an unexpected NCAA Tournament bid. After losing the opening game of the Hockey East Best-of-Three Quarterfinals to UMass-Lowell, the Black Bears responded by winning the next two games to send Maine to Boston for the Semi-Finals. In the semi-finals, his team overpowered Boston University to advance to the finals against a heavily favored Boston College. Though his young team eventually fell in overtime by a 7-6 score, Whitehead’s resurgent team reinvigorated the Black Bear faithful which is anxiously awaiting the start of the 2010-2011 season.
