Big Red Back on the Winning Track

On Friday January 29, the Big Red hosted perennial Mid-Atlantic power LaSalle College High School at the Loucks Ice Center. Junior forward Real Huot scored his team leading 14th goal of the season with senior captain Keith Campbell picking up the helper.

Going into the third period tied 1-1, Huot put the Big Red up 2-1 two minutes into the final stanza with Campbell and senior forward John Slocum recording assists. Two minutes later, Huot completed the hat-trick, scoring his 16th goal of the season with sophomore Christian Lawrence (Minneapolis, MN) and junior defenseman Rafe Teer recording assists. Two minutes later, Slocum closed out the scoring with assists from Lawrence and junior defenseman Nick Ogden.

Game Notes: Senior Nick Jasset stopped 17 of 18 shots for the win . . . Lawrenceville improves to 6-0-0 in the all-time series between the schools . . . Huot’s hat-trick was the first recorded by a Lawrenceville player this season.

Delbarton up Next

On Wednesday, February 3, Lawrenceville will host an undefeated Delbarton School team that features three players already committed to Division I programs for next year. Delbarton has breezed through its opponents thus far, having racked up big wins by decisive margins against traditional powerhouses from Upper Canada College (4-1), Hotchkiss School (6-2), Bishop Hendrickson (RI) (9-0), Catholic Memorial (MA) (7-1), Hill School (5-2), and Pomfret School (6-3). Lawrenceville leads Delbarton in the all-time series 15-3-0.

Sanguinetti ’06 Sets AHL Skills Competition Record

Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti L’06 set an event record in the 2010 AHL Skills Competition, in Portland, ME on January 18, 2010, as part of the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic. Sanguinetti’s time of 13.677 seconds in the Reebok Fastest Skater Event was the fastest ever recorded in the competition. Sanguinetti’s Planet USA team was defeated in the Skills Competition, 18-12, by the Canadian team.

Alumni Round-Up

On Tuesday, January 26, first-year forward Don Kleckner L’09 scored his second goal of the season, and junior defenseman Henry Coxe L’07 recorded his fifth assist of the campaign in Wesleyan University’s 6-4 loss on the road at Trinity College . . . On Friday, January 29th, Tim Whitehead L’79 and his Maine Black Bears improved to 12-9-2 on the season after an impressive 6-3 road victory at Vermont . . . First-year forward Chris Zaires L’07 scored his fifth goal of the season to help the Brown Bears to a 4-3 overtime victory over RPI in what may be the most impressive Brown win in first-year coach Brendan Whittet’s inaugural season . . . Martin Drolet L’07 led the Middlebury College Panthers to a 7-4 against Colby, scoring once and recording three assists in the process . . . On Saturday January 30th, Hamilton College first-year defenseman John Ogden L’09 recorded his first NCAA point when he picked up an assist in the Continentals 5-4 overtime win against the University of New England . . . Zach Diaco L’06 scored two goals and assisted on another – figuring on all Tufts University goals – to lead the Jumbos to a 3-3 tie against Skidmore College . . . Henry Coxe L’07 recorded his second assist in as many nights as Wesleyan University overpowered St. Anselm’s College 5-2 . . . Martin Drolet L’07 scored his team-leading eleventh goal of the season to lead Middlebury College to a 5-2 victory over Bowdoin College . . . In ACHA action, University of Delaware defenseman and captain Brandon Weiner L’07 picked up two assists to lead the #14 ranked Blue Hens to a 4-2 victory over #2 Penn State.

Strong Effort Not Enough to Overcome Taft

The Big Red rebounded to start the new year with a nice performance on the road against a strong team from Taft. Lawrenceville competed hard in all three zones throughout the first two periods but could not find the back of the Taft net. Down by two heading into the third period, the Big Red's effort was finally rewarded with just under five minutes remaining in the contest when defenseman Nick Ogden (Junior/Montclair, NJ) found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. His blue-line partner Khifer O'Connor (Senior/Pembroke, ONT), and forward Zach Diamantoni (Freshman/Belle Meade, NJ) notched the assists on the power play goal. Lawrenceville had a late burst with several offensive zone faceoffs in the last minute of play but could not find the equalizer. Netminder Nick Jasset (Senior/Foxboro, MA) continued his stellar play between the pipes, stopping 34 shots in the 2-1 loss.

The Week Ahead

The Big Red will look to rebound from the narrow loss at Taft on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 3:30 pm against the Portledge School from Long Island. The Big Red leads the all-time series between the two schools 11-3-0, and won the last meeting against Portledge by an 8-1 score on January 10, 2007. Portledge entered this past weekend with a 7-2-0 record, with big wins coming against Wyoming Seminary (4-3), Middlesex School (6-1), and Worcester Academy (6-2). Portledge also advanced to the championship game of the Barber Holiday Tournament co-hosted by St. Mark's and Middlesex Schools.

On Saturday, January 16, following the Lawrenceville School Hockey Alumni Game, the Big Red will face-off against arch-rival Hill School at the Loucks Ice Center. The Big Red will be looking to avenge two early season losses to the Blues, the most recent of which was a 2-1 loss in the championship game of the Rider Cup Tournament at Albany Academy. Lawrenceville leads the all-time series between the two schools 62-52-12.

Sanguinetti '06 an AHL All-Star

On the strength of his fine play that has earned him several call-ups to the New York Rangers, Bobby Sanguinetti '06 has been named to the Planet USA All-Star Team for the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic for the second year in a row. Sanguinetti, a 2006 first-round selection (21st overall) by the New York Rangers, is currently tied for second among AHL defensemen in points, with six goals and 18 assists for 24 points, despite having missed significant time while skating in the National Hockey League.

Drolet '07 Continues to Impress at Middlebury College

Martin Drolet '07 has continued his strong play for the Middlebury College Panthers, picking up Most Valuable Player honors at the Middlebury College Holiday Classic, where he scored three goals and assisted on three others to lead the Panthers to the tournament title. For his efforts, he was also named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Whitehead '79 Leads Maine to Florida College Classic Title

Tim Whitehead '79, the Head Coach of the University of Maine Black Bears, has led his young team to the Florida College Classic title and in the process, into the USCHO Division I Top 20 Poll. In the preliminary round, Maine advanced past Princeton University in a shoot-out, and advanced to the championship game where the Black Bears met USCHO #3 Colorado College. There, Maine knocked-off the WCHA powerhouse by a 3-2 score to capture championship laurels. Maine is now ranked #18 in the most recent USCHO poll, and enters the second half with a 10-7-2 record, unbeaten in their last eight games, which is tied for the longest unbeaten streak in the nation.

Alumni Round-Up

Friday Night: In the ECACHL, Chris Zaires '07 picked up his team-leading ninth assist for Brown University in a losing effort on the road at Dartmouth . . . Mark Armstrong '06 scored his third goal of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University Saints to a 7-2 non-conference win over Niagara University . . .Martin Drolet scored a goal and added an assist to lead Middlebury College past Hamilton College by a 3-1 score in NESCAC action . . . Bob Sanguinetti '06 recorded his 20th assist of the season as his Hartford Wolfpack downed the Worcester Sharks by a 5-2 score in the American Hockey League . . . In the ACHA, Justin Stouch '06 recorded an assist to help lead the University of Delaware to a 4-3 shoot-out victory over West Virginia.

Saturday Night: Cody McKinney '07 stopped 34 shots to help Colby College to a 1-1 tie against #3 Norwich University . . . Zach Diaco '06 picked up an assist in Tufts University's 2-1 loss to UMass-Boston

Bobby Sanguinetti ’06 Makes Ranger Debut

Bobby Sanguinetti ’06 made his regular season National Hockey League debut on Friday, November 27, when he donned a New York Ranger uniform as the Broadway Blueshirts took on the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Rangers 1st Round Draft Pick in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft logged 16:14 of ice time in his first NHL game.

Sanguinetti’s second NHL game placed him on the ice in Pittsburgh against Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, November 28. In a fortuitous coincidence, Sanguinetti’s former team, the Lawrenceville School Big Red, was in Pittsburgh for the Shady Side Academy Thanksgiving Tournament that evening, and the team was in the stands rooting him on.

In twenty-one games this season with the Hartford Wolfpack (AHL), Sanguinetti had scored six goals and added sixteen assists for twenty-two points, which led all AHL Defensemen in scoring, and he was 4th in the league overall in scoring.

Martin Drolet ’07 Named NESCAC Player of the Week

Martin Drolet ’07, a sophomore at Middlebury College, has been named NESCAC Player of the Week for the week ending November 30, 2009. In the opening game of the Great Northern PrimeLink Shootout hosted by Norwich University, Drolet earned an assist on Middlebury’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to USCHO #1 Plattsburgh State. In the Consolation Game against Wisconsin-Stout, Drolet scored two goals and notched three assists as the Panthers rolled over the Blue Devils. In addition to being named NESCAC Player of the Week, Drolet was named to the Great Northern PrimeLink Shootout All-Tournament Team.

Chris Zaires ’07 ECACHL Division I Rookie of the Week

Lawrenceville’s Chris Zaires ’07, a freshman forward for Brown University, had been honored as the ECAC Hockey League Rookie of the Week for the week ending November 22. A wing, Zaires had four points in the Bears' two games this week, scoring two goals and assisting two others. On Tuesday November 16, against Providence College, Zaires led the Bears as they fought back from a 4-1 deficit to come to within 4-3 in the game's final minutes. His first NCAA goal brought Brown to within one, with 1:11 left, he assisted on Brown's third goal.

On Saturday night against Yale, Zaires had another two-point game, again leading a Brown comeback. After Yale had taken a 4-1 first-period lead, Zaires scored to make the score 4-2 midway through the second period. Then, with Yale leading 5-4, Zaires assisted on the game-tying goal, tying the game at 5-5 and forcing overtime. Donald Kleckner ’09 Named to NESCAC Honor Roll

Donald Kleckner ’09, a freshman forward forward for Wesleyan University, has been named to the NESCAC Honor Roll for the week ending November 22. Lawrenceville’s 2008-2009 Co-Captain had a 1-3-4 line in his first two collegiate games, and is tied for second in the NESCAC in points scored after the first weekend of play.

Keith Campbell ’10 Named Captain of the 95th Lawrenceville School Varsity Ice Hockey Team

Keith Campbell ’10 has been named as captain of the 2009-2010 Boys’ Varsity Ice Hockey Team, the 95th season of ice hockey at Lawrenceville. Campbell, a rising senior from Newark, DE will be the 120th Lawrentian to serve as captain of the storied program. This past season, Campbell led the team with fifteen assists and added seven goals for twenty-two points. He is a product of the Upland Country Day School and the Philadelphia Little Flyers. He will be assisted by defensemen Brendan Gallinek (Summit, NJ) and Khifer O’Connor (Pembroke, ONT), as well as fellow forward John Slocum (Middlebury, VT).
