Alex Lin '14 and Cathy Yoon '13 have won Gold Key awards in the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards, Northern New Jersey District. Works that receive Gold Key recognition at the regional level are automatically included in the pool of work that is judged nationally among Gold Key winning work from across the country. The Scholastic awards (which include a writing competition) are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.
Lin received two Gold Keys (and three Silver Keys) for his photography. Yoon collected two Gold Keys (plus two Honorable Mentions) in the drawing, sculpture, and mixed media category. They will be honored at an award ceremony and opening reception at the Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, N.J. 973-746-5555) on Tuesday, February 12, at 6:00 p.m.
In the coming weeks, panels of nationally renowned artists, art professionals, and arts educators will review Gold Key works from across the country. The artwork is judged in the digital format. Jurors select work for national recognition based on three criteria: originality, technique, and emergence of a personal vision. Winners will be announced on March 15. National Medalist students are recognized with certificates and medals and are considered for national exhibition and publication opportunities arranged by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. National Medalists are also invited to attend the National Celebration events in New York City.
