Alex ’13 and Patrick ‘15 McLaughlin are brothers from Princeton N.J. who both are top wrestlers on the Lawrenceville School boys’ wrestling team. Alex, a team captain, has been on the team for four years while Patrick has been wrestling for Big Red for the past two.
This isn’t the first time the brothers have been teammates -- they have also competed together on their hometown’s recreational wrestling squad. Before coming to Lawrenceville, the brothers joined the Princeton Area Wrestling Society (PAWS), a recreational wrestling team for youth wrestlers from the local area. Princeton University’s wrestling coaches run the program and allow the young athletes to use the University's wrestling facilities.
John Clore, coach of the Lawrenceville boys’ wrestling team and a Princeton alum, had heard about the McLaughlins from the PAW coaches. Clore has been very impressed with the boys' level of dedication in practice and to the sport. The McLaughlin family has a wrestling mat in its basement so that the brothers can drill during breaks and the off season. As they have grown closer and closer in weight, they are able to train harder. While this could make the boys more competitive with each other, they have, instead, remained very supportive and encouraging towards each other. “They have a great relationship that helps them both get better,” said Clore.
While both are key wrestlers to Big Red, they each bring different attributes and techniques to the team. “Pat is more of the fiery and energetic guy and Alex is really technically sound and steadier," Clore explained. As the season progresses, Clore hopes to have both brothers placing at the Prep Nationals in February where they could become Prep National All-Americans. He believes they both have the talent to compete at these top levels because of their natural ability and drive. The brothers have high hopes for themselves and for each other, and are looking forward to the rest of the season.
As Alex heads off to college next year, Patrick will find himself wrestling for Big Red for the first time without his older brother. “I will really miss him,” said Patrick.
