On Campus : Bunn Library : Information for Students
Both the Library and the librarians will play an integral part in your education at Lawrenceville. The library's collection of over 62,000 items includes books, CDs, videos and DVDs, as well as over 200 magazines and newspapers. Details about these materials are available from anywhere on campus using the Bunn Library Online Catalog.
The Dewey Decimal system is the classification system that has been used for classifying most library materials. Reference books are housed on the Main Floor of the library and do not circulate. Circulating books are shelved as follows: Dewey Numbers 000-399 on the Lower Level, 400-699 and Fiction on the Main Level, and 700-999 on the Upper Level. Current periodicals and newspapers are shelved in the McGraw Reading Room on the Main Level. Compact Discs are housed in the Music Listening Room on the Upper level. Videos, DVDs and back issues of periodicals are in secured storage on the Lower Level. A range of electronic databases are accessible to all networked computers on campus.
Library Behavior
To ensure a pleasant and productive environment in the library for reading, study and research, the community has the following expectations:
Circulation Policy
The Lawrenceville School ID serves as a library card and is required when to check out materials at the Circulation Desk. For emergency situations, there is a waiver book that can be signed a limited amount of times if the I.D. has been forgotten or is missing. Students are responsible for all materials checked out on his/her card. The loan period for books and CD's is three-weeks, but they may be renewed as long as no one else has put a request on the item. If a request has been made, then the item must be returned quickly. We do not charge fines for regular circulating materials.
Please return or renew the respective items as soon as they are due. Materials may be returned to the Circulation Desk or after hours in the book drop located on the Crescent side entrance to the building. Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy to our patrons and are sent weekly to the student’s school mailbox. Failure to respond to a Third/Final Notice will result in restrictions and Saturday night detention. The charge for lost books is the price of the book and a $25.00 processing fee.
To contact the Circulation Desk Assistant, Mrs. Donnelly, with questions or to place a request, email circ@lawrenceville.org.
Reserve Materials
Located at the Circulation Desk, reserve materials are books, photocopies, etc. that have been assigned by a teacher for class reading or materials that can help with studying, such as laptop computers, calculators, and portable CD players. These materials are available for everyone to use for a limited period of time in the library. To charge out reserve materials, present the Lawrenceville School ID.
In-House Reserves may be used only in the library for a 2-hour time period. If there is no demand on the item, it can be renewed. Overnight Reserves may be used in the library but can also be checked out at 9 p.m. and are due back at the library promptly at 10 a.m. the following day. A fine of $1.00 per hour will be charged for all overdue Overnight Reserves. The teacher who put the items on Reserve makes the decision whether or not they can go out overnight.
Improper use of Reserve Materials may cause a student to be placed on restrictions.
Interlibrary Loan
Sometimes the Bunn Library may not have the books or journal articles needed for research and in these instances you may request items through the Interlibrary Loan service (ILL). This requires advanced planning as it may take a week or more for items to arrive from another library.
It is a privilege to be able to borrow from other libraries. We expect all interlibrary loans to be returned promptly. If you need an extension, we must request it from the lending library.
To make a request, please fill out the ILL form available at the Circulation Desk or email ill@lawrenceville.org.
Princeton University Access Cards
The library has purchased two access cards for the Princeton University libraries for research, but please be aware that the cards do not allow borrowing privileges. To use one of the access cards, contact a staff member in person at the Circulation Desk. The access card is available for use for 24 hours with a current Lawrenceville school I.D. on file.
Computer Labs
There are two general-purpose computer labs available for student use in the Bunn Library. In the evening, Library Computer Technology Consultants staff the Multi Platform Computer Lab on the lower level to assist students in using the computer technology and application software available in these facilities. Students are reminded that all use of technology must adhere to the School's Acceptable Use Policy.
