Student Computer Information

At this time, the School does not require that students bring a computer; although, last year more than 98 percent of our students did. There are over 200 computers available on campus for students to use.

Both the Mac and Windows platforms are supported on campus; however, approximately 66 percent of our students currently use Windows-based computers. The most important factor is the software. Teachers will distribute, and expect to receive, files in the Microsoft Office format. If your computer does not come with Office, the School recommends purchasing Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition, which is available for a substantial discount at most computer retailers.

The decision between a laptop and desktop is entirely up to your family. Currently, most students are not bringing computers into the classroom and if an exercise requires computer use, the School makes computers available during class time. Most computer use currently occurs in the library, in the dorms, in computer labs and at home. However, over the past few years, as laptop prices have gone down, we've noticed more students buying laptops due to the ease of transportation and smaller space requirements. The drawback is that in the case of laptops and desktops similarly equipped, laptops are generally more expensive, and less durable.

It is possible to connect to the School network via wireless in specific locations. The School has deployed wireless access points in Bunn Library, Irwin Dining Center, the common areas of all dorms, and in specific areas of each classroom building.
