ITS Computer Recommendations for 2011-12
All students should bring
- An Ethernet cable (even laptop users; wireless access is not campus-wide)
- Install/restore discs for their computer system and Office software
- Serial numbers and contact information for warranty support
- Surge Protector (fire code prohibits the use of extension cords on campus).
Windows Desktop/Laptop Computer Hardware
- Intel or AMD Dual-Core Processor at 2.2 GHz or better, or Core i3/i5/i7
- 2 GB RAM (1 GB minimum)
- CD/DVD RW
- Ethernet networking (10 Mbps or higher)
- Ethernet cable (CAT 5 or better, 10 to 15 ft.)
- Wireless capability (802.11 b/g and WPA2 encryption)
- Windows 7 Home Premium or better
Apple Macintosh Desktop/Laptop Computer Hardware
- Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 2.4 GHz or better, or Core i3/i5/i7
- 4 GB RAM (2 GB minimum)
- CD/DVD RW (“SuperDrive”)
- Ethernet Cable (CAT 5 or better, 10 to 15 ft.)
- AirPort Extreme Wireless capability (802.11 b/g and WPA2 encryption)
- Mac OS X v10.5 (“Leopard”) or v10.6 (“Snow Leopard”, preferred) Operating System or higher
Additional Hardware Recommendations
- USB flash drive (also known as “thumb” drive or “key” drive)
- Carrying case and locking cable (for laptops).
Software Requirements
- Up-to-date anti-virus / spyware / malware protection software with subscription to updates.
- All computers must be able to read and write files in the Microsoft Office format:
- We recommend Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition (which is available at a discount) or Office Standard Edition
- Free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft Office are available from www.openoffice.org and www.libreoffice.org, or www.neooffice.org for Macintosh users only.
Warranty Recommendations
- 3-4 years full warranty
- Full accidental damage coverage for laptops, including screens.
