The Living History of Rome
Experience the history of central Italy and reimagine the lives of the people of Ancient Rome! Enliven the places and figures of classical antiquity by exploring the primary Latin texts, structures, and artifacts in which their accounts survive. A background in the Latin language is welcome but not required!
Explore the rich history of the Roman Empire in beautiful central Italy! This 10-day adventure with Atlas Workshops will bring you to a variety of locations where crucial events in the history of Rome occurred. Stand in the places in the Roman Forum where Cicero persuaded the Senate, where the slain body of Caesar was cremated, and where Augustus marched in his triumphs. Look down from the peak of Mt. Vesuvius upon the ruins of Pompeii. Explore museum treasures of the past and the relics of the people who built the imperium sine fine (the “empire without end”). At each location students will read the historical accounts (some in Latin, others in English) that bring the physical landscape of Italy to life by connecting past with present.
Our trip begins with three days near Naples on the Amalfi Coast, where we visit the Oracle of the Sibyl at Cumae, the ruins of Emperor Tiberius’ ornate pleasure palace on the island of Capri, and the excavated ruins of Pompei. We then travel to Rome to take in all of the iconic sights of The Eternal City: the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Ara Pacis, Vatican City, and many, many more. The adventure concludes north of Rome in the Lazio region where the remnants of Etruscan culture remain vibrant. Along the way we explore the cultural history of Italy by observing the architectural landscape of the city and by savoring the local cuisine. Come experience the past in the places where it happened!
Sign-Up Instructions
Participation for all Lawrenceville Harkness Travel Programs is dependent upon a review of student applications, Head of House/Advisor recommendations, medical clearance for participation, and financial and disciplinary standing. Seniority and gender balance is also considered in the selection process.
Application to this program is not considered complete until both of the following items have been submitted:

Price
$5,400
Includes all ground transportation, flights, meals, accommodations, and any required non-routine vaccines. Families will receive a list of all MANDATORY vaccines. All travelers must be up-to-date on routine vaccines; if routine vaccines are administered on campus families will be charged. If the participant has received any of the mandatory vaccines, documentation must be provided to the Health and Wellness Center no later than December 15,2023.
Target Student Population
Latin students are the primary target student population for this trip, though we also welcome non-Latin students with a strong curiosity about the people and places of classical antiquity. The trip will include significant walking and moderate hiking (at Cumae or Vesuvius) so students should be willing and able to be active on a daily basis.
A background in Roman history and the Latin language is welcome but not required.
