MLK Day

Community Service

Embracing the benefit of our location in the midst of several diverse communities, we have the opportunity to engage with a variety of people in various circumstances and to learn about their challenges and aspirations through service.

All Lawrenceville students are required to participate in community service for at least one term per year, but are welcome to continue engaging in this program for as long as they are interested. They can participate in one or more of the following ways.

Lawrenceville Community Action Projects

Students can choose to join an established program, like a Harkness Travel Service Trip or a weekly activity coordinated by the Community Service department.

Student Clubs

Working with their club advisors, student-run organizations can find ways to provide service either through their own programming or in partnership with existing nonprofit organizations.

Events

Several annual and one-time service events are held throughout the school year. These include Halloween and springtime carnivals for young children and their families, collections for food pantries, fundraising events, and more.

Through these activities students learn the logistics and processes involved in developing community partnerships, hosting and producing events, developing programming, and working as a team across ages, demographics, and cultures. They gain a sense of fulfillment and belonging on a larger scale while sharing the joys of their personal interests. They see the direct impact of service on their community partners, on their peers, and on themselves.

Students who are interested in leading community service efforts have several opportunities to engage, including joining the Community Service Council. The group is responsible for organizing House projects and for keeping students informed about community service matters, with the Council’s leader serving as a member of the Student Council.

A group of people, including adults and children, are gathered around a colorful playground structure in an outdoor setting.
