Approach

The mathematics curriculum helps students thrive in and beyond the discipline by encouraging students to be curious and inquisitive, consider multiple approaches to problem solving, and engage in both independent thinking and collaboration.

Focus
At Lawrenceville, we believe that mathematics directly translates to one’s ability to explore ideas and connections, to question assumptions, and to consider multiple approaches in seeking solutions.

In all of our courses, students work to construct and evaluate mathematical arguments, develop and apply mathematical models to examine real-world quantitative relationships, and develop quantitative literacy skills that are foundational to informed citizenship. Students translate between and among graphic, numeric, algebraic, and verbal models to solve problems and describe relationships.

Experience

In each course, we seek to develop students’ mathematical reasoning and their ability to use the language of mathematics to communicate their ideas and observations. Harkness teaching and learning is fundamental to intellectual engagement, independent thinking, and effective collaboration. Students engage in class discussion and group work to develop their mathematical understanding with a focus on understanding not just the functions of mathematics, but the underlying concepts that allow students to build on and between them.

Mathematics Beyond the Classroom

In addition to classroom learning, students can extend their interest in mathematics through a variety of clubs that center on coding and programming, big data and AI, and mathematical problem solving. Our optional Harkness travel trips augment students’ learning as they explore historical applications of mathematics in Greece.
