China: Chinese Language and Cultural Immersion Scholarship Program
Immerse yourself in the Chinese language and culture. This generous opportunity to study in China has been sponsored by a Lawrenceville family for two individuals to attend the School Year Abroad Summer - China Program.

SYA China Summer will change you. You won't merely master Mandarin; you will meld with a culture that is at once ancient and modern, mysterious and on the world’s center stage. Bicycle past pagodas and temples nestled amid high-rise buildings and bustling markets. Be one with the community as you live with a local family, experiencing its foods, celebrations, language and traditions. Travel urban and rural China, while mastering a challenging curriculum centered around Chinese culture and global environmental science. $400 - This scholarship will cover core program costs, immunizations, vaccinations, visas and flights from the NY area.
Note: Roundtrip flights to Beijing are coordinated by SYA and originate in Boston. Expenses for any additional flights or flight deviations will be soley the responsibility of the family.
Two students will be chosen for this merit-based opportunity. The application process will include the Lawrenceville Application Survey, Housemaster / Day Advisor Recommendation, and a secondary essay that will be sent to students after October 28. Students must also complete the School Year Abroad Summer Program application. Interested applicants must complete one year of Mandarin instruction by the start of the program.
Once selected, students will work both with the Lawrenceville Harkness Travel Program office and SYA to finalize forms and arrangements since students will be travelling independently.
Participation for all Lawrenceville Harkness Travel Programs is dependent upon a review of student surveys, Housemaster/Day Advisor Recommendations, medical fitness for participation, and financial and disciplinary standing. Seniority and gender balance is also considered in the selection process.
Applications for this program are not considered complete until both of the following items have been submitted; in addition an interview is required and a completed SYA application.
All passports must be current seven months past the return date of any School sponsored trip. The passport must contain at least two free pages for potential visa needs. Please check and plan accordingly.
A photo copy of the passport informaton page is required for sign-up when the first payment is due.
