Viault Family International Fund

Spend your summer living with a host family and immersed in the language and culture of a country where one of Lawrenceville's three taught modern languages is spoken. Thanks to a generous and fully funded gift from a Lawrenceville family, chosen Lawrentians will be eligible to study on a program in France, Spain, or China.

Dates for Individual Programs

China  -    June 16 - July 22, 2020
Spain  -     June 16 - July 23, 2020
France -    June 16 - July 20, 2020

Through a generous gift of the Viault family, chosen Lawrentians will receive a fully funded summer immersion experience in their language of study. The Harkness Travel Program has partnered with School Year Abroad Summer to deliver this opportunity.  The Viault Family Fund provides need-based awards for four students, including a small spending stipend, to each deserving language student in one of Lawrenceville's taught modern langauges.

SYA Summer will change you. You won't merely make significant progress in your language; you will meld with cultures that are once ancient and modern. Bicycle past cathedrals, pagodas, and temples nestled amid high-rise buildings and bustling markets. Be one with the community as you live with a local family, experiencing its foods, celebrations, language, and traditions. Travel to urban and rural destinations, while mastering a challenging curriculum centered around learning language. School Year Abroad gives you the opportunity to spend five weeks of your summer creating another place to call home. The world is calling you. Answer it at SYA Summer.

Four students will be chosen for this need-based opportunity. The application process will include  the Lawrenceville Application Survey, Housemaster/Day Advisor Recommendation, and a secondary essay that will be sent to students after October 28.  Students must also complete the School Year Abroad Summer Program application.

Once selected, students will work both with the Lawrenceville Harkness Travel Program office and SYA to finalize forms and arrangements since students will be travelling independently.

Participation for all Lawrenceville Harkness Travel Programs is dependent upon a review of student surveys, Housemaster/Advisor recommendations, medical fitness for participation, and financial and disciplinary standing. Seniority and gender balance is also considered in the selection process.

Applications for this program are not considered complete until both of the following items have been submitted; in addition an interview is required and a completed SYA application.
Through House and Harkness, Lawrenceville challenges a diverse community of promising young people to lead lives of learning, integrity, and high purpose.  Our mission is to inspire the best in each to seek the best for all.
