More Snow? No Problem! B&G Keeps Us Safe

How do Lawrenceville’s many roads, pedestrian walkways and stairways stay clear and safe during winter weather? It takes planning, preparation, and hard work by the School’s Building and Grounds (B&G) staff. The team of 20 pays close attention to each weather forecast and takes into account timing of the storm, the amount and type of precipitation expected, School event schedules, air temperatures, and more when planning their approach.

Grounds Manager James Grow says the key to his team’s success is its dedication.

“Each and every part is integrated and needs to flow smoothly,” he says. “The ultimate goal is to open on time, with zero slip and falls, no accidents, and a healthy staff.”

Grow says the team brings extra clothing to stay warm and dry, and makes sure they are well-rested, fed, and hydrated before each shift. They prepare by servicing all equipment, which includes an inventory of de-icers, finalizing their staffing and deployment plan, and finally, executing the work.

Grow says much of his team’s work happens in the dark after hours during all kinds of weather -- rain, and sleet, high winds, and extreme temperatures.

“This is a war that we want to win...sometimes in completely unbearable conditions.  Hats off to the shoveling crew who endures the most severe weather!” he said.
