Alistair Lam ‘23: Golden Soprano

Vocalist Alistair Lam ’23 has received two recent honors. He has been rated Class A Gold One in New Jersey Spring Solo & Ensemble Festival 2021 (Soprano Solo Voice) division and placed second (national finals) of the American Prize in Voice/Friedrich & Virginia Schorr Memorial Award for Art Song/Oratorio (high school division).

Lam performed “An die Musik” by Franz Schubert in both competitions, adding “Music for a While” by Henry Purcell for the N.J. Festival. (Watch Lam’s performance of “Ain die Musik”)

“Music for a While’ is a piece from the Greek Tragedy classic ‘Oedipus,’ about two priests summoning and calming Alecto, a ghost goddess,” Lam explained. “’An die Musik’ expressees Schubert’s love and gratitude for the art of music and the power of music to carry us into a better world. Both of these pieces are slow with nice legato lines, but they contrast each other well with the former being more sorrowful and the latter more joyful.”

Lam said he was “delighted and honored” to be recognized and extended thanks to his teachers, Laura Heimes and Christopher Sierra for their guidance. “I am excited to learn new repertoire and share my singing with the Lawrenceville community and beyond in the coming years,” he said.
