From Campus to Company: Students Deepen Ballet Training through Philadelphia Ballet Collaboration

On October 12, advanced and intermediate-level dancers from The Lawrenceville School traveled to the School of Philadelphia Ballet studios for a master class and lunch. Rehearsal Director Charles Askegard and select trainees joined the Lawrenceville dancers to connect about their training experiences, artistic goals, and the role of dance in shaping identity and community.

“From walking the storied halls and dancing in the professional studios, to witnessing the brilliance of a world-class performance by the Philadelphia Ballet, our students were immersed in an experience that brought their training to life in extraordinary ways,” said Director of Dance Derrick Wilder.

He continued, “The ongoing collaboration between The Lawrenceville School and the School of Philadelphia Ballet not only reinforces our mutual dedication to the art form, but also provides an invaluable opportunity for students to broaden their horizons, deepen their artistic voice, and engage more meaningfully with the professional dance world.”

“Both Philadelphia Ballet and Lawrenceville share the belief that dance education is a gateway to confidence, creativity, and cultural understanding,” said Sarah Cooper, Philadelphia Ballet creative director for community education and public programs. “These shared moments — in the studio and in the theater — build bridges between communities. We are grateful to continue this partnership.”

Lawrenceville Dance & Philadelphia Ballet

Lawrenceville’s relationship with the Philadelphia Ballet, which began in 2021, has included everything from dance workshops and shared warm-ups to campus performances and backstage visits. Last April, nearly 500 guests from local elementary schools attended a performance at Lawrenceville of “Peter and the Wolf” staged by members of the School of Philadelphia Ballet.

“Both organizations remain steadfast in their shared commitment to nurturing the growth and artistry of their dancers, firmly believing that the passion, discipline, and joy cultivated through dance extend far beyond the walls of any studio,” Wilder said.
