5 Questions 4 Veronica McMahon

Which three historical figures would mathematics teacher Veronica McMahon like to meet around a Harkness table? What’s her favorite time of day? And who never fails to make her laugh? All this and more in 5 Questions 4!

What never fails to make you laugh?

My younger sister, Colleen, can always make me laugh (often without even trying). She’s the best - always up for an adventure, ready to give a rib crushing hug, or to declare it time for a selfie.

If you could be part of a Harkness discussion with any three figures from history, who would you choose?

Angela Davis, Michelle Obama, and Eleanor Roosevelt

What holiday do you love to celebrate?

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday to celebrate. A full day of family – parents, siblings, cousins, aunts & uncles, grandparents – good food, too many desserts, football, post dinner walk (for those not in food coma), and oftentimes a card game and “holiday” movie. Quality time together without any gift giving pressure.

What person -  living or dead -  inspires you?

One of my former Heads of School, Ann Pollina. She was an amazing math teacher, especially Calc BC instructor, mentor, and school leader, and her words often inspired all of us to do better and pushed us all to become the best versions of ourselves. One particular quote from one of her convocation speeches I find particularly inspiring and pushes me to act is, “The world should be better because you are in it. It’s that simple. Well, simple to say, but oh so difficult to do, because it means you also need to be clear-sighted enough to challenge those things that may have been handed down but aren’t right, those that don’t fit the sense of justice and community we espouse. It means being bold enough to change the things that need changing, just because it is right and because you care about leaving the world better than you found it.”

What is your favorite time of day?

Sunset (b/c sunrise is too early). Pausing to appreciate all the colors and beauty gives me a sense of peace and awe for the world around me.
