Avant-Garde Lego Club Contest to Benefit Homefront

One might imagine members of Lawrenceville’s Avant-Garde Lego Club gathered in the Gruss Center for Art and Design, creating fantastic cities, robots, and Star Wars models for their own enjoyment. But it’s so much more.

“The Lego Club is about making our interests useful and beneficial to the community,” said Club Founder Co-President Samuel Tang ’22.

The Club is now holding a design contest, inviting Lawrentians to create small, seasonally themed Lego projects. They will then order Lego bricks to create 20-30 packaged kits, based on those designs, and distribute them to children served by HomeFront. “The contest allows members to design a custom model for children during a time when seasonal festivities are hindered by the pandemic,” said Tang.

Simplicity and ingenuity are key to winning designs. “We want something that is easy and fun to build for children. The design should also motivate further creativity,” Tang explained. “The beauty of Legos exists in their reusability and potential for creativity. Every kid will use the Legos differently. For some, the design will be a strict set of steps to follow to make a polished piece, and for others the instructions will just be loose guidelines used to create something personalized.”

The HomeFront children can take the kits home to their families, Tang said, “…to have fun and express their creativity while making a nice looking creation to display in their house. “Hopefully, we can provide joy for children during this stressful and scary time.”
