Chapel Bells Ring in Honor of Congressman John Lewis

To honor the memory of Georgia Congressman John Lewis, The Lawrenceville School’s Edith Memorial Chapel carillon rang out in unison with bells and shofars at houses of worship around the country today.

“[Lawrenceville] joins countless others in this ringing out in thanksgiving for this courageous and visionary American,” said School Chaplain Rev. Sue Anne Steffey Morrow.

As reported by the Religion News Service, more than 500 congregations committed to an online request to ring bells for 80 seconds — one second for each year of the congressman’s life — during Lewis’ funeral held today in Atlanta. This volunteer effort, in partnership with Lewis’ family, is supported by numerous organizations, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College, and Network, a Catholic social justice organization.
