Lawrentian Team Takes First Prize in Economics Challenge
In May, a team of four Lawrenceville students took first place in the David Ricardo Division of the National Economics Challenge. Congratulations to Jamie Ho ‘27, Roshan Shah ‘25, Yashesh Shah ‘27, and Daniel Siahaan ‘24, along with their coach, history and economics educator John Giannakis
The David Ricardo Division is one of two divisions in the National Economics Challenge (NEC) for high school students. It's open to teams of students who are first-time competitors and have taken no more than one general economics course, either currently or previously.
Anna Androulakis ‘26 Repeats as International Rising Talent Music Festival Grand Prix Champion
Congratulations to Fourth Former Anna Androulakis who, for the second consecutive year, won the Grand Prix at the International Rising Talent Music Festival. As a Grand Prix winner, she performed at Carnegie Hall with the following pieces: 2024- Dance of the Elves op.21, no.3 by Génari Karganov and 2023- Prelude in D flat major op.43, no.1 by Reinhold Glière. She has been playing piano for 10 years and has participated in the Music Fest for five.
Lawrentians “Crush” National Latin Exam
Language teacher Scott Barnard reports that 23 of Lawrenceville’s 27 National Latin Exam takers received top marks this spring. They all received certificates of merit - 14 at the gold (highest) level. “Needless to say, I am extremely proud of what our students can and are accomplishing, and it will be very rewarding to see what they can do as they continue through our program,” Barnard said.
Lawrentian Science Students Shine
Ryan Bian ‘25 earned the fourth highest score in New Jersey (and 31st in the world) on the 2024 Physics Bowl exam. “Ryan is a thoughtful student who is deeply curious about how the world works,” said Science educator Shinae Park. “He brings a passion for physics and insightful ideas to class every day.”
Third Formers Haldora Churchill and Selena Yu were top in the poster and essay portions of the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research contests. Churchill’s entry addressed careers in biomedical research and Yu’s essay discussed “Biomedical Research and My Life.”
Rian Julka ‘25 Honored for Volunteerism
On June 9, Rian Julka ‘25 received the New Jersey State Governor’s Volunteerism Award in recognition of his volunteer work, highlighted by his efforts as an advocate for the National Plan to End Parkinson’s Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden on July 2. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will now establish an advisory council and the National Parkinson’s Project, a first-ever federal initiative to prevent and cure Parkinson’s disease, treat its symptoms and slow or stop its progression. Rehanna Yakubu ‘25 Wins Congressional District Art Competition
On May 17, Congressman Patrick McHenry (NC-10) announced Rehanna Yakubu ‘25 as the winner of 2024 Congressional Art Competition (NC-10) for her acrylic work, “Soeur - En Passant.”
“It is my honor to recognize Rehanna for her outstanding work," said McHenry. "As the final Art Competition winner of my tenure in Congress, I am proud to have her artwork represent the Tenth District in the U.S. Capitol. Congratulations to Rehanna on this tremendous achievement.”
Yakubu’s artwork was displayed in the U.S. Capitol alongside the winning pieces from each Congressional district and she was invited to attend the Congressional Art Competition Reception in Washington, D.C. At McHenry’s request, a U.S. flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in Yakubu’s honor.
The Congressional Art Competition is a privately-funded competition with support from the Congressional Institute. Since the competition began in 1982, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the competition.
