Lawrenceville’s Hutchins Galleries Present “Inside/Outdoors”

“Inside/Outdoors,” an exhibit by Eva Mantell, Joel Beck, and their collaboration greenworldx2, will be on display at The Lawrenceville School’s Hutchins Galleries from September 1- October 1. A gallery reception with the artists will take place on September 15 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The duo will also present an artist workshop for current students next month.

During the exhibit, the Hutchins Galleries will be open on Mondays (1-4:30 p.m.), Tuesdays (9 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m.), Wednesdays (noon-6 p.m.), Thursdays (9 a.m.–noon and 1-4:30 p.m.), Fridays (9 a.m. –noon and 1-4:30 p.m.), and Saturdays (9 a.m.–noon). Visits can also be scheduled by appointment by contacting hutchinsgalleries@lawrenceville.org.

According to the artists, the exhibit blurs boundaries between inside and outside, between the natural and the fabricated, with the goal of sparking new connectivity. Space is re-visualized and re-experienced by connecting art, design, and the environment. That connection to the environment – a hallmark of Lawrenceville’s National Historic Landmark campus – and the sustainable materials that the artists use for some of their pieces – are two of the reasons Hutchins Gallery Curator and Director Melina Guarino said she felt “Inside/Outdoors” was the right exhibit for Lawrenceville. “It is a great way to welcome both new and returning students to the Galleries,” she said.

“Inside/Outdoors” will be on display throughout all of the exhibit spaces in the Hutchins Galleries. “We wanted to take the art and make it as lively as possible,” said Mantell. “I think we’re really trying to understand the potential of all places, so [the Galleries] are a great place to be – they have a lot of life and ideas in them. We are hoping that [visitors] will see and experience them in a new way.”
