McClellan Society Honors Lawrentians for Dedicated Community Service

Lawrenceville honored over 50 students at the McClellan Society dessert on May 15, honoring these Lawrentians for their dedication to community service. The Society is named for Lawrenceville Head Master Bruce McClellan, who introduced the School’s community service requirement in 1981 in the belief that Lawrenceville should foster in its students a strong commitment to service to the greater community. Established in 2009, the McClellan Society honors a group of volunteers who have demonstrated this significant engagement.

Fourth and Fifth Form students are invited to apply, and their credentials are reviewed by a committee led by the Community Service Department and comprised of students and faculty.

The School's Community Service Program encourages all Lawrentians to connect with the greater community, giving them the opportunity to engage with a variety of people outside their immediate world. Through service, students have a common experience that enhances their Lawrenceville education and builds community on- and off-campus. Projects range from weekly commitments (such as after-school tutoring for local youth) to one-time events (including serving meals in a local food kitchen) – and students quickly learn that it is the quality of time, not the quantity, that can be life altering.

Liza Strong ’24 recalled that just a few hours spent as a Third Form chaperone at the School’s Springfest Carnival set her on the path to becoming this year’s Student Council Community Service Representative. Every year, Lawrenceville invites dozens of local youngsters to campus for an afternoon carnival, complete with rides, prizes, and treats. Each child is escorted through the attractions by a Lawrentian.

“I felt like my heart glowed when I was spending time with [the child I escorted]. I felt I was doing something to brighten this child’s day,” Strong said. “It really made me so enthused about community service and I wanted to spread that to the broader school community.”
