Big Red Profile: Heaven Figueroa ‘20

Laura Zvinys ‘20
Heaven Figueroa ’20 is one of the two captains of the girls’ varsity basketball team, and plays a large role in leading the squad. She was recently been nominated as one of the top players in New Jersey, which is just one of her many accomplishments in the world of basketball.
Laura Zvinys: When did you start playing basketball, and what has caused you to stick with it?
Heaven Figueroa: I started playing basketball when I was eight, but I started playing officially on my first travel team when I was ten. My father inspired me to stick with it because he played basketball as a hobby, as well as in both high school and college, and I followed my dad with whatever he did. He has trained me my whole life, which is how I got to where I am now.
LZ: What do you enjoy most about basketball here at Lawrenceville?
HF: Basketball here at Lawrenceville is a great opportunity, and I like how organized it is. At Lawrenceville, basketball is more of a team sport, while my travel team is more about individual player profiling for college. Here, you get to move the ball, work with your teammates, and get the great high school experience of team bonding.
LZ: What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses as a basketball player?
HF: Having good court awareness is one of my strengths, and I’m also a strong point guard at times. Some of my weaknesses would probably be keeping my head up and making the best decisions on the court. It’s also pretty hard to be accurate with my shots.
LZ: Where do you see yourself as an athlete in the coming years?
HF: I’m a junior now, so I see myself as one of the leaders on the team. I have to create space for those coming and for the people who are going to be the future leaders of the team. I want to make my mark and leave this school being known.
LZ: Do you have any hobbies outside of basketball?
HF: Right now, I’m starting my own clothing line. I also like to write songs, dance, watch Netflix, and sing, even though I’m not very good at it.
LZ: What other sports do you participate in and what do you like most about them?
HF: I’ve been playing varsity softball since freshman year, and I also play varsity volleyball. Volleyball is really fun because it kind of prepares you for the upcoming basketball season. My mom played volleyball so she’s kind of hard on me about playing, but it’s actually a really fun sport. Softball is fun as well because I’m pretty fast so I like being the runner. I played a lot of sports before I came here, but I picked up on both softball and volleyball when I came to Lawrenceville, and they have both taught me a lot.
