Nancy Smithey Wins CASE Support Staff Award

“Hardworking.” “Devoted.” “Respected.” These are the words that Lawrenceville colleagues use repeatedly to describe Nancy Smithey, recipient of this year’s Support Staff Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The award honors a support staff member for long-term service as a dedicated member of an independent school advancement team.
“I’m shocked, elated, and quite overwhelmed!” said Smithey.
Smithey, assistant to Mary Kate Barnes, Lawrenceville’s Assistant Head Master/Director of Advancement, has been an integral part of the School’s Alumni and Development team since 1997. In this role, Smithey works to ensure Barnes has the administrative support she needs to excel in her work.
Barnes said she thinks of Smithey as “the air traffic controller for my office. She can direct virtually any request to the appropriate source, juggle multiple critical assignments, and suggest viable alternatives when necessary.”
In her nomination letter for Smithey, Barnes wrote, “Nancy has been tireless in her efforts to ensure that our Alumni and Development Office puts its best foot forward – with alumni, parents, trustees, and within the School community. Her high standards translate into high quality in everything we do.”
Joanna Campbell Harmonosky, Director of Development Operations, recalled, “I was told early that ‘if you don’t know something, Nancy knows the answer.’ Eight years later, I can unequivocally say that has been true. . . . Nancy is universally respected and genuinely liked by all of her colleagues. She is the heart of our office and her unwavering dedication to our department’s success reminds all of us to try just a little harder.”
Erin Graham, Director of Development, stated, “[Smithey’s] level of dedication to our office’s role in the School community is a unique asset, setting a high standard for colleagues and enabling us to provide an unparalleled level of service to alumni, parents, and trustees. . . I am proud to call her my colleague.”
