I am Robert Palmer, Director of Music at Lawrenceville. My colleague, Keith Roeckle, Chair of Performing Arts, and I are responsible for all facets of the music program here.

There are many opportunities to be involved in music at The Lawrenceville School. Our music curriculum offers foundations courses as well as elective classes in performance, music production, composition, and music history and theory. Our program includes six performing organizations; four instrumental and two choral ensembles.

Our instrumental ensembles consist of The Collegium Lawrenceville, The Lawrenceville Community Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble, and the Jazz Lab Band. We typically hold auditions for these groups the first week of classes during the fall term. At Lawrenceville, The Community Orchestra and Jazz Lab Band are open to all interested students, while The Collegium and Jazz Ensemble are appropriate for more experienced players. The Community Orchestra rehearses Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:50 p.m. The Collegium Lawrenceville (which is the more select group) rehearses Wednesday mornings from 8:00-9:00 a.m. We require students in The Collegium to also participate in Community Orchestra. These ensembles meet at these times so as not to conflict with classes, study hours, or athletic requirements. The Jazz Ensemble meets Wednesday mornings from 8:00-9:00 a.m., while the Lab Band meets on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:50 p.m. Mr. Roeckle conducts the School's orchestras as well as the Jazz Lab Band. Our Jazz Ensemble is led by Mr. Roger Prieto.

Lawrenceville Singers is open to all students and meets in a relaxed setting on Wednesday mornings from 8:00-9:00 a.m. For more experienced singers, The Lawrentians is our select choir, which meets as a scheduled class during the academic day. Students in the Third through the Fifth Forms may audition to sing in The Lawrentians.

Regarding private study, we offer weekly lessons for a wide variety of instruments and voice through our Private Instruction Program (PIP). Information about this program can be found here.

Another notable aspect of Lawrenceville is our acclaimed Midday Music Concert Series, which happens once a month on Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Students who have studied a solo or small-group piece may apply to perform at these recitals. Please see the "music" section of the website for pictures and more information.

We welcome your interest and lively participation in Lawrenceville's musical life. Please let us know of any additional questions you may have. We look forward to meeting you!
