CHRIS CUNNINGHAM P'14 '18

Chris Cunningham is Lawrenceville's Assistant Head Master (appointed in 2017) and Dean of Faculty (appointed in 2012). He has been an English Master since he joined the School in 2003.

Before becoming Dean, Cunningham had served in a range of capacities, including Acting Chair of the English department, Chair of the Discipline Committee, and Housemaster of McPherson. His efforts as head coach of the Big Red girls' varsity cross country team earned him Coach of the Year awards from the Trenton Times, Trentonian, and Star-Ledger in 2011. Under his leadership as Dean of Faculty, the School has expanded its commitment to Harkness teaching and learning, faculty evaluation and feedback, and hiring a diverse, triple threat faculty body. Cunningham also spearheaded the process that led to the School’s reaccreditation in 2015.

He received his A.B. in Modern Thought and Literature, Phi Beta Kappa, from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Literature from Duke University. His poetry, criticism, and reviews have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies. Twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize, Cunningham has completed two collections of poetry, “No Stranger but Ourself,” and a book-length sequence, “Mr. Anderson.”

Before joining Lawrenceville, Cunningham taught at Princeton Day School, Stuart Country Day School, and Montclair Kimberly Academy. He was also an adjunct professor at Rider University and Mercer County Community College.
The position of Dean of Faculty brings with it oversight of all faculty personnel issues and shares with the Dean of Academics responsibility for curriculum design, development, and implementation.
