David D. Laws P'21 '23

David D. Laws assumed the position of the Lawrenceville School Dean of Academics on July 1, 2014.

David Laws began his tenure at Lawrenceville in 2000 and has served the School in a number of important roles. He served as assistant Science Department chair from August 2002 to June 2011, when he stepped down to serve as Lawrenceville's Assistant Dean of Academics and Registrar before returning to full-time teaching. He has spent 11 years as a Head of House, first in the Stephens House, then in the Griswold House. He has coached varsity swimming, a variety of House sports, and currently works with the Big Red indoor track team. Laws is also the co-faculty advisor to Lawrenceville’s Science and Robotics Club.

Laws has received numerous honors from the School, including the Henry and Janie Woods Meritorious Service Award (2013), the Henry C. Woods Family Junior Teaching Chair (2010), and the Robert B. Ritter '53 Award for Fostering a Nurturing Academic Environment (2002). He is also the recipient of the American Chemistry Society (Princeton/Trenton Sections) Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher award (2011). He has published nearly 20 articles in peer-reviewed science journals; developed and illustrated "ChemQuizzes" (W.W. Norton & Company, 2002); and is a Delaware Valley Science Council Trustee.

He holds a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
The Dean of Academics guides Lawrenceville's curriculum design and its developing academic policies in collaboration with the academic department chairs and the Dean of Faculty. The Dean coordinates the support of students with special academic needs. The Dean oversees the Registrar's Office, the Educational Support Program, and other curricular initiatives. Working with the School's Director of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Partnerships, the Dean supports curricular innovations and educational partnerships.
