Ron Kane '83 returned to Lawrenceville in 1987 where he joined the English department, acted as assistant housemaster, and as assistant coach to the Big Red boys' varsity basketball, under then head coach Armond Hill '72; currently an assistant coach of the Boston Celtics. In 1991 Hill left to coach on the collegiate level and Kane was promoted to head coach.
While a student at Lawrenceville, Kane captained and was voted All-State for the basketball, football and baseball teams, and was the first Lawrenceville athlete to accumulate 12 varsity letters. Kane's accomplishments resulted in his induction into the Lawrenceville Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. In 1987 he earned an English degree from Franklin and Marshall College, where he continued as a three-sport athlete, and in 1994 he earned a master's degree in literature from Drew University.
In his 20-plus years of head coaching leadership, Kane's teams have captured three New Jersey Prep A State Championships, two Peddie School Invitational Tournament titles, and three Hill School Tournament titles. With an average of 17 wins per season, additional accolades include five 20+ win seasons, three Mid-Atlantic Prep League titles, and a 4-1 record in the prestigious Prime-Time Shoot-Out. A three-time Trenton Times "Coach of the Year," (1995, 2001 and 2004), in 2009 Kane earned his 300th coaching win! Coach Kane was also named Prep Coach of the Decade in 2010 for the Trenton Times. In 2011, Coach Kane was named by the Trentonian as "Prep Coach of the Year".
Inspired by Coach Kane's more than two decades of leadership, Lawrenceville basketball alumni have gone on to not only succeed in the fields of business, education, law and medicine, to name a few, but several players have also turned coaching into their career of choice. A member of the Board of Trustees of the Boys' Club of New York, in the last decade Kane has coached the BCNY basketball team on trips to both Cuba and Italy.
Through House and Harkness, Lawrenceville challenges a diverse community of promising young people to lead lives of learning, integrity, and high purpose. Our mission is to inspire the best in each to seek the best for all.
