John Edward Schiel came to Lawrenceville in 1974 as a Mathematics master, coached freshman and junior varsity baseball, and was an assistant coach for varsity football until 1990. In 1987 he was named head coach of the girls' varsity softball team and has held the position ever since.
Coach Schiel has successfully led the girls’ varsity softball team to the New Jersey Prep A Championship title in 1990, and in 2002, 2003 and 2010 the state title. He was also named the Princeton Packet and Lawrence Ledger “Coach of the Year” in 1988 and by The Trenton Times in 2002 and 2010 and Star-Ledger in 2002.
While a student at Yorktown High School and Haverford College, Schiel played both football and baseball.
