Dave Cantlay came to Lawrenceville in 1988 as an English master and Housemaster of Upper East. He coached girls' varsity tennis from 1988-1998 (the last five as head coach) and in 1999 he became the boys' varsity tennis coach. Though retired from teaching full time he remains on the courts for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
A graduate of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, Cantlay also attended Radcliffe Publishing Course, followed by six years as a writer and editor at Time-Life Books. He then returned to Hampden-Sydney as assistant to the president, where he eventually began teaching. He also earned a master's degree in English from New York University.
Coach Cantlay has led both the girls' and the boys' varsity tennis teams to repeat wins of the state prep title and The Trenton Times has named him “Prep Coach of the Year” several times.
Through House and Harkness, Lawrenceville challenges a diverse community of promising young people to lead lives of learning, integrity, and high purpose. Our mission is to inspire the best in each to seek the best for all.
